In June the first installation of Scibreak's fault current-limiting circuit breaker technology went online in the Swedish railway grid. The installation is located near Katrineholm, some 80 km southwest of Stockholm. First, realistic tests were made to verify that the breaker could operate correctly. During these, artificial grid faults were induced and the capability of the breaker to rapidly eliminate the fault current was checked.
The tests were successful, and the breaker is now online, helping to protect the railway grid from dangerous fault currents. In the longer term, the technology will allow for safe upgrading of the railway power supply, something that will be needed to meet increasing traffic and passenger streams.
